Is Work Stressing You Out?

Imagine being around beings that only shared how they actually feel. That’s what my life was like growing up on a farm. The animals were completely genuine in how they felt, be it anger, sadness or joy.

We humans, hold in our feelings or try to disguise how we feel. Animals don’t do that.

Unless humans have induced the stress, you don’t tend to see animals with the same stress related problems suffer.

That leads me to wonder just how much we contribute to our own health problems.

Job stress and health problems from it is a popular topic in the emails I receive. I get comments such as “My blood pressure was never this high until I started this job.” OR “I’m exhaused all the time, especially when I get home from my desk job.”

Who know modern conveniences could create so many issues? Over one million stress related job absences occur daily.

Job stress has become such a global and prominent issue that high dollar conferences and corporate training are devoted to the topic.

A few other ways to deal with the issue also exist.

Just stop working?

This is really not practical or feasible though for most of the population.

A better alternative would be to follow a few other exercises that do not put our financial futures in jeopardy.

Say no sometimes. This does not have to be rude or insubordinate.

Many people are driven to keep adding to their workload, long after they should have been “tapped out.” This is usually to help others who seem to need the break. Every so often, ask yourself if you are actually the one who needs the break.

As yourself just what will actually happen if you declined this particular request?

Also, remember that it can be okay to ask for help yourself. If you manager, co-workers, friends and family are asking for help – maybe there’s something to this.

Walk away from your job. That’s right – walk away. But just for a few minutes every hour or two. Take a short but slow walk away from the area.

Try to eat better. Nutritious meals and snacks will make a big difference in how you feel.

Watch how you are sitting. Slouching or crouching for extended periods of time will make the back as well as other parts of your body sore.

Breathe deeply. The additional oxygen will make a big difference. This doesn’t require leaving or creating a special environment.

Give your fingers and hands a break. Typing all day can be exhausting too. Breathe in deeply, and as you exhale stretch out your fingers and feel the stress exiting through your finger tips.

This simple technique should give you at least momentary relief.

Try not to process work related thoughts once you have left work. It will be there tomorrow. Use the ride home for relaxation instead of more stress.
