Pizza Dough Making At Home
Pizza delivery has been around so long now that it’s hard to remember a time when pizza dough making was a standard cooking routine. It’s really quite simple to do.
Five simple and inexpensive ingredients is all it takes to make a basic pizza dough. Flour water, oil, salt and yeast complete the list.
Pizza dough making can be accomplished in just minutes at home. The longest period of time involved with pizza dough making will be the wait for the yeast to do its work and make the dough rise, or proof, as its called in baking.
There are numerous recipes available on the Internet for pizza dough making. Just select a simple one to start and the process should go like this:
First, get all your ingredients measured out in the correct quantities and set aside. It’s a real time saver and makes everything more efficient.
Add all your dry ingredients to a bowl and mix them thoroughly. Next add the water. The water optimally would be at or around 105 degrees, which is lukewarm. The yeast works best at this temperature.
Stir the ingredients until everything comes together in a ragged ball, then add the oil. Stir until all the oil is absorbed.
You can now either try to knead the dough in the bowl or remove it to a flour-dusted surface. Some even work the dough with both hands in mid-air. Add a little flour to the dough ball and your hands as necessary to keep them from sticking.
When the dough begins to take on a smooth appearance and becomes very elastic, you’re done kneading. Form it into a round ball.
Lightly oil a bowl and place the dough ball into it. Roll it around to coat with the oil. Put some plastic wrap over the bowl and put it in a warm location (not hot) for about two hours or until it doubles in mass.
After the proofing is complete, place the dough on a flour-dusted surface. Begin rolling it to shape with a rolling pin. Thin crust needs to be rolled to about a 1/8 inch thickness. But you can make any thickness you like. Remember it will thicken in the oven.
Once done, transfer it to your baking pan. Sometimes you have to roll the dough around the rolling pin to keep from tearing it while transporting, then unroll it right onto the pan. Shape or trim the dough as necessary to fit the pan.
Guess what? You just succeeded one your first attempt at pizza dough making!
